DIY Jil Sander Netted beanie

It was only last ss2011  that the Jil Sander’s market bag was all the craze (good and bad) and now for their SS 2012 collection Jil Sander has done it again (via Stephen Jones), This time with a beanie. When I first saw the beanie worn by Bryanboy and Anna dello Russo I was angry that people would pay so much money for a beanie with a piece of net on it but then again I am conflicted. I love the simple modernist design brought about by Raf Simmons and I really do consider it art (in a sort of DIY ready-made way) however since the piece is not singular I don’t know if a mass produced item that could be more cheaply made is worth  $450+-. I know this is on the verge of becoming ‘what is fashion?’ babble so I will compromise by making my own in hommage to Jil Sander for just under £5. Here are the steps:

You need:

oversized beanie in whatever color you want ( I got mine for £2 on ebay)

net or veiling for millinery in same color as beanie ( I bought a meter for £2 on ebay)

a needle and thread (in the same color as beanie)

1.) Start by grabbing the end of the net and placing it on the back of your head.

2.) Wrap the net around your face so that you meet the back of the net.  Keep Hold of this spot because this is where you will cut.

3.)Cut length wise

4.) Wrap the cut net around your head and find the center top of your head like below. This will be where you cut horizontally.

5.)Cut of the horizontal part of the net that you just measured.

6.)Put on the beanie to the place where you want to wear it. 7.)Wrap the cut net around your beanie and adjust it how you like it. It should be just below the bottom lip line and loose around this area.

8.) Sew the back area  in the middle with just one stich.

9.)Since the thread of the net is very thin you will sew around it like below.

10.)Put the beanie on and touch the center of your head this is what you will sew down.

11.)Put the beanie (now sewed on front and back) and hold down the left and right hand top sides that need to be sewed and do this.

12.) Et voila you are done!! Now you can parade around like me  (very man repeller)! What do you think about the beanie in general (Mine or JIl Sander’s)? Would you wear it? Would you pay the price?
